Castro does not need more surgery

Castro 'does not need more surgery'
26 December 2006 15:58

A renowned Spanish doctor has said Fidel Castro is recovering and does
not need additional surgery.

Jose Luis Garcia Sabrido, head of surgery at Madrid's Gregorio Maranon
hospital, was speaking after returning to Spain from Cuba.

The leader who has ruled Cuba since 1959 has not been seen in public for
five months. Few medical updates have been made public since his
reported intestinal surgery in late July.

His health is being treated as a state secret, and his brother, interim
President Raul Castro, has told Cubans that Fidel's recovery continues.

Fidel Castro's absence at a military parade on 2 December stunned people
and sparked a wave of speculation that he may be seriously ill, or near
death. He was last seen in an October 28 video, in which he appeared weak.

News reports late last week said the Cuban leader was too ill to receive
his friend, Nobel Prize-winning Colombian author Gabriel Garcia Marquez,
who was on the island for nearly a month.
