Cold in Cuba? Ask Bainoa Residents
Havana, Jan 17 (Prensa Latina) In a country with a yearly average temperature of 27 centigrades when the barometer goes below 15, is an eyebrow raiser and all remarks to the weather require exclamation marks, or better ask the residents of Bainoa, south of Havana.
The weather station of the small country town registered last night the lowest temperature of the current winter season in Cuba: 3.7 centigrades!
Said to have a microclimate, Bainoa, a vegetable-producing area, is known to have felt the lowest temperatures in the island´s history, in fact it holds the record low of 0.6 centigrades from February 18th, 1996.
However, temperatures dropped sustantially in other areas of the western portion of the island, according to the national weather service:
The barometer at the International Jose Marti Airport measured 4.4; in Tapaste, 4.8; Batabanó, 5.6; Aguada de Pasajero (central Cuba), 6.2, Bauta, 6.4; Santo Domingo (also a central town), 6.7; Union de Reyes and Melena del Sur, 7.0; Jovellanos, 7.1; Guines, 7.5; Guira de Melena, 7.6, and Santiago de las Vegas, 7.8.
Another five western towns reported values in the 8 centigrade scale, while zones of the eastern section of Cuba also registered the season´s lowest temperatures.
Master in Science Miguel Angel Hernandez, from the Forecast Center of the Cuban Metereological Institute, explained the "marked drop in temperature" is due to "the influence of a continental mass of cold air that combined with almost no clouds and weak winds, factors which favor the cooling of the surface particularly during the night."
In its midday report, the weather service predicted the low temperatures, especially in western and central Cuba, will continue for the rest of the week as a "new cold front" is expected on Wednesday.
When it is very cold for Cubans, they just describe it with the common proverb: "the monkey is whistling." Most probably from tonight and Wednesday on Bainoa residents might change it to: "the whole pack is singing or dancing salsa."
