Bakery employee threatened for talking to journalist
HAVANA, Cuba - August 10 (Richard Roselló / www.cubanet.org) - Lázaro
Álvarez has been told he could be fired from his job at a bakery in
Batabanó for holding a conversation with an independent journalist.
"That is unfair," said Álvarez' brother.
"Lazarito has been working there for two years, and he even works on
Sundays."
Álvarez, 25, talked to the journalist about another brother, Francisco,
a farmer who has been jailed for several weeks for attempting to leave
the country.
Álvarez said he has been called in twice for questioning, once by the
local police and once by the Border guards. In both instances, he said,
officials threatened to fire him from his job and blame him for missing
merchandise.
