The son of former Cuban president Fidel Castro is to visit South Africa,
the Science and Technology Ministry said on Wednesday.

Professor Fidel Castro Diaz-Balart will visit South Africa from 31 March
to 5 April, to hold talks with Science and Technology Minister Mosibudi
Mangena and the heads of science institutions in the country.

Biotechnology, nanotechnology, nuclear and energy technology as well as
climate change will be topics for discussion.

Diaz-Balart, a nuclear physicist and the scientific advisor to the State
Council of Cuba, will present a lecture on nuclear technology in
Pretoria on 31 March.

He is also scheduled to meet former president Nelson Mandela.

Relations in the field of science between the two countries began in
2001 when they signed an agreement on scientific and technological
co-operation with a focus on biotechnology.
