Public trial held in a movie house

Public trial held in a movie house

CAIBARIÉN, Cuba, November 15 (Gustavo de la Paz Vicent, Villa Blanca Press / www.cubanet.org) - What was advertised as an "exemplary trial" of a thief was held last week in a movie house where residents were invited by local radio stations to attend.

Humberto Echemendía was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for stealing a video cassette player from a primary school and Freddy Bustamente Reyes was fined 2,000 pesos, the equivalent of almost a year's salary, for having bought stolen property.

Before the trial was held, the radio stations carried announcements inviting the public to appear at 11 a.m. on November 9 at the Cervantes movie house for the event.

One of those who attended said the prosecutor presented a tedious and out of context intervention, and later a lawyer for the defendants mounted his defense
