Forecasters: Chris Dying Over Cuba

A LOOK AT THE TROPICS
Forecasters: Chris Dying Over Cuba

Aug 7, 2006 01:31 AM

The tropical weather system Chris, which forecasters speculated Friday
had a small chance of reviving back into a tropical storm, appears to be
in the death throes over Cuba today.

The National Hurricane Center issued its final advisory this morning,
saying Chris had become nothing more than a broad area of low pressure
by about 4 a.m., about 150 miles east of Camaguey, Cuba.

Chris had winds of 25 mph and was moving to the west about 13 mph.

Tropical Storm Chris weakened into a depression Friday in the eastern
Caribbean.

Forecasters originally expected Chris to cross Cuba and enter the Gulf
of Mexico, reaching Texas or Mexico by early Wednesday.

There were few reports of damage from Chris, though in Puerto Rico, the
Fajardo River spilled its banks Thursday afternoon and sent water
gushing over a highway, temporarily shutting down the road in the U.S.
territory's northeast coast as the storm moved swept past.

Chris' sustained winds had reached 65 mph on Wednesday, threatening to
make it the first hurricane of the 2006 Atlantic season.
