Cuba calm despite Castro illness

Cuba calm despite Castro illness

HAVANA In the streets of Havana, it looks like any other day. People
going to work and school, lining up for buses or jogging on the beach.
In short, you might not know that the man who's ruled there for decades
is seriously ill.

Unlike in Miami, where exiles whooped it up in the streets, Havana has
remained calm since last night's announcement. In fact, about the only
clue that something's amiss can be found at the U-S diplomatic mission.
An electronic news ticker there tells Cubans they "can count on our help
and support."

At a popular Old Havana cafe, waiters quickly went back to work after
being briefly stunned by the news. Some are confident Castro will be
back to his old self.

But one leading opponent in Havana believes it must be bad, if it caused
Castro to have stepped aside, even temporarily.
