IMMIGRATION AUTHORITIES are at crossroads to determine the future of an
illegal immigrant who was sent back to Barbados from her native Cuba two
weeks ago.
The woman was deported from Barbados last May 15 after overstaying her
time on theisland.
However, immigration officials in Havana, Cuba, refused the woman entry
and ordered her return to Barbados.
She is being held at the Immigration's holding area at Grantley Adams
International Airport.
Efforts to get a comment from the Cuban Embassy in Barbados proved
futile this week, but reports indicated that the woman might have been
sent back to Barbados because she breached a stipulated period for
Cubans to stay out of the country.
Chief Immigration Officer Gilbert Greaves confirmed the unusual
development and told the DAILY NATION efforts were being made to find
out the immigration policy of the woman's birthplace.
"It seemed she must have stayed beyond the time allowedout of the country.
"However, we plan to approach the Cuban Embassy to see if they could
have the matter rectified," Greaves said.
Queried about his department's next step if Cuba's doors remain closed
to the woman, Greaves added: "We would first seek adjudication. I am not
going to go that route before Imake representation to the Cuban Embassy."
