Official statistics: more Cuban farmland idle or underutilized

HAVANA (AP) -- Cuban officials say an increasing percentage of the
island's farmland is idle or underutilized, prompting attempts at reforms.

A study by the National Office of Statistics shows the percentage of
idle farm land has increased from 46 percent in 2002 to 55 percent last
year.

Authorities are moving to increase production by restructuring the
Agriculture Ministry, granting idle land to small farmers and paying
them more for some of the goods they sell.

Cuba is trying to reduce dependence on food imports as soaring
international commodity prices have sparked a worldwide crisis.
