London, May 29 (IANS) Human rights have been "severely" curtailed in
Cuba in 2007, Amnesty International has said, Spain's EFE news agency
reported Thursday. Freedom of expression, association and movement
remained subject to "severe restrictions" in Cuba in 2007, the rights
body has said in its latest State of the World's Human Rights report.
The report said 62 people, including independent journalists and human
rights activists, were imprisoned in Cuba in 2007 "for their non-violent
political views or activities" and subjected to intimidation and harassment.
According to a Cuban government estimate, around 225 political activists
are currently lodged in various prisons.
The report said the US economic embargo has affected the country's
economy, particularly the supply of food and improvement in health services.
Though Cuba has signed several UN conventions on fundamental rights, it
is yet to match the country's existing legislation with those
agreements, Amnesty noted.
Amnesty said all media communications in the island country remained
under the state control.
