Figures released Tuesday by the U.S. Coast Guard show that the number of
Cuban migrants interdicted at sea so far this year is the largest since
the rafter crisis 13 years ago.
The figures show that as of 2:39 p.m. Tuesday, at least 2,988 Cubans had
been stopped at sea while attempting to reach the United States -- the
greatest number in one year since 1994, when 37,191 were stopped in the
rafter exodus.
Until Tuesday, the greatest number of interdictions since the 1994
exodus occurred in 2005, with 2,952.
