KEY BISCAYNE -- Miami-Dade County police found 39 Cuban immigrants in a
Key Biscayne public park Sunday morning after they were smuggled in by
speedboat, authorities said.

The 28 men, eight women and three children were uninjured and seemed
healthy when they were found in Crandon Park at 6 a.m., said U.S. Border
Patrol spokesman Steve McDonald. Border Patrol took them into custody.

No smugglers had been identified by Sunday evening. Boarder Patrol
agents were unsure how many people were involved in the smuggling and if
the smugglers were part of the group in custody. The investigation
continues.

McDonald did not know how long the group was at sea and where in Cuba
the boat came from.

Under the Cuban Adjustment Act, Cubans who make it to U.S. soil
typically qualify for permanent residency a year later. Smugglers are
subject to prosecution.
