As musicians, artists in various disciplines, social activists and
defenders of human rights we wish to express our solidarity with Cuban
musician Gorki Aguila who was arrested in Havana on August 25 and is
actually being prosecuted by the Cuban justice system for the crime of
"dangerousness" which may carry a sentence of 1 to 4 years in prison.
According to the Cuban Penal Code or Law 62, the "condition of
dangerousness" defines a person who is "prone to commit a crime" by the
contradictions observed in their conduct, per socialist morality norms.

The only "crime" Gorki committed is to have told in his lyrics, played
by his band Porno Para Ricardo, his opinion about the everyday living
conditions in Cuba, and his non-conformity with the government headed by
the Castro brothers. Since the year 2000 Porno Para Ricardo has recorded
several records while keeping their independence from the different
political organizations that exist in the island, as they describe in
their website http://www.pornopararicardo.com/ .

Their critical posture has resulted in all kinds of obstacles to their
creative work and different forms of intimidation and harassment, which
now reach a critical level with the arrest and trial of their best known
voice.

As lovers of freedom and social justice, defenders of people's right to
live and express themselves by means of artistic endeavors with no
restrictions of any kind and without governmental coercion, we demand
that the Cuban state immediately release Gorki Aguila, an end to the
harassment against dissident artists in Cuba and the guarantee of
respecting the human rights of the people, among which we include
freedom of thought.
