Looting in Havana following Hurricane Wilma

Looting in Havana following Hurricane Wilma

HAVANA, November 1 (Leonel Alberto Pérez Belette / www.cubanet.org) - Police arrested many people accused of looting businesses in Havana following Hurricane Wilma.
The looting occurred mainly in the area of the Malecón and in Vedado where many businesses were left exposed after being hit by tidal surges.
This reporter witnessed how frogmen on launches were paying more attention to picking up cans of beer, bottles of rum and perfume and canned goods than those who needed rescuing.
Many of those arrested were set free following protests by relatives. Others caught with goods in their possession remained in jail.
One of those detained told this reporter that he had taken foodstuffs since his home was under water and he had nothing to eat.
