Rafters released after five months awaiting trial
HAVANA, Cuba - October 24 (Amarilis C. Rey, Cuba-Verdad /
www.cubanet.org) - Four men who were apprehended trying to leave the
island by sea were freed after waiting in prison for a trial date. The
four had been held at the Melena Dos prison in Havana province.
In any case, the officer in charge, Nildo López, told them they would
not get the official release papers yet.
The men said they are free, but cannot work because they have been
locked out of their jobs and occupations. They were each fined 5000
pesos, they said.
The rafters were apprehended April 28 in waters off the Cape of San
Antonio, in western Cuba. Three of them are from Holguín, and one from
Havana.
