Septic tank overflows next door to bakery

HAVANA, Cuba - June 5 (Ernesto Roque Cintero, UPECI / www.cubanet.org) -
A septic tank has been overflowing next door to a bakery in a tony
neighborhood of Havana since the beginning of the year, complain
municipal authorities can't or won't address the problem adequately.

The tank is on centric 12 Street between the El Loal bakery and the
building next door. Local residents say the overflowing water makes the
area impassable and shopping at the bakery distinctly unpleasant but
still necessary. Cubans buy their bread at the bakery to which they are
assigned by government regulatory authorities, and do not have the
option of shopping at another establishment.

One neighbor said the problem dates back to the beginning of 2006, and
authorities have only sent a crew to clean out the tank after repeated
complaints but calls the effort insufficient.

"That doesn't solve the problem; it's like putting a band-aid on it."

A student at the health sciences polytechnic school pointed out the
health hazards of the situation, and joked that they should change the
name of the bakery. "Call it The Pestilence," he said.
