Four members of the Cuban national basketball team that played two
exhibition games on Grand Canary Island did not show up Monday morning
at Gando Airport in Las Palmas for the return flight to Cuba via Madrid,
the Spanish newspaper Canarias-7 Basket reported.
The four players left Dunas Canteras Hotel, where the team was staying,
Sunday afternoon. By Sunday night, "there was a presence of Cuban
consular officials at the hotel," the newspaper said.
The Las Palmas newspaper La Provincia put the number of missing players
at five, but later reported that the fifth absentee rejoined the team
very late Sunday.
The team played two games on the island last week, one on Friday against
the Spanish national team, and another Saturday against a Grand Canary
team. Cuba beat the Canarians, 76-65, but fell to the Spaniards, 94-57.
The games were in preparation for the 2010 Central American & Caribbean
Games, to be played in Puerto Rico.
