18 charged in Cuban migrant smuggling

In a major crackdown on migrant smuggling, federal authorities on Friday
announced indictments of 18 suspects on a variety of charges involving
efforts to bring more than 200 Cuban nationals into the United States
illegally.

The eight separate conspiracy indictments, returned in Key West and
Miami, involved smuggling and attempted smuggling activities dating from
2005 to 2008, according to the U.S. attorney's office in Miami.

If convicted, each defendant faces up to 10 years' imprisonment.

The named defendants are: Yoel Escalante, Noelio Herrera, Joseph James
Chakos, Jose Clemente-Franco, Richard Rojas, Leosvel Cordova-Parrada,
Maykel Medina, Javier Gonzalez-Rojas, Hector Julio-Villavicencio, Pedro
Garcia Le Desma, Rey Lazaro-Punales, Ernesto Montero, Osmani Arostegui,
Alexander Bosque, Eliner Camargo-Otana, Jesus Garcia-Cordero, Eliezer
Lazo Martinez, and Jorge Arnaud Vera.
