Opposed to ending U.S. embargo

Opposed to ending U.S. embargo
Clear picture of Cuban reality
November 6, 2007

After reading about easing the isolation of Cuba by the United States, I
came to the conclusion that your Editorial Board does not have a clear
picture on the reality of the Cuban situation.

Cuba trades with Europe, Latin America, Canada, Africa and the Far East.
Many European companies have large investments in Cuba.

I agree with your statement that the embargo gives Fidel Castro the
excuse to blame his people's hardship on the United States. Yet lifting
the embargo would not change the conditions for the Cubans.

There is a group of elites that have no desire to change the status quo.
These are the Castros' close associates, and they enjoy all of the
comforts of a modern society; they travel all over the world and have
bank accounts in Switzerland. They realize that the end of the Castro
regime will mean the end of their lifestyle, not to mention the likely
retribution for all of the crimes committed against the Cuban people.

It is widely known that humanitarian aid that reaches Cuba is, in many
cases, resold in the world market in exchange for cash while Cubans
suffer. The same goes for a portion of the oil that Venezuela ships to Cuba.

The Cuban government has been censured by human rights organization, and
nothing has changed in 48 years. With or without the embargo, change
will not come to Cuba as long as the Castros and their accomplices
continue to hold that country hostage.
