Ladies in White, Raul Rivero embarrass Castro in Madrid
Cuban dissidents dominated Madrid's cultural life last week, as the NGO
Reporters without Borders opened a photographic exhibition on the Ladies
in White, a group of wives of imprisoned Cuban democratic resisters. The
organization received the European Union's Sakharov Prize for human
rights last year; its leaders were not permitted to leave Cuba to
collect the award. Last week also saw the release of Humberto Fontova's
new book, Fidel: Hollywood's Favorite Tyrant. Dissident leader Raul
Rivero called it "a book written with passion, but with reason,
information, and rigor." According to Rivero, Castro plans to use the
funds he is currently receiving from Hugo Chavez's Venezuela "to create
a mini Soviet Union, and to 'extend the revolution' to other countries
in the area."
