An independent news agency calling itself the Agencia Libre Asociada
(ALAS) was launched on 19 September in the presence of Guillermo Fariñas
Hernández, the winner of the 2006 Reporters Without Borders
cyber-freedom prize. Headed by Belinda Salas Tápanes and with six young
reporters, the new Havana-based agency aims to focus on civil liberties.
Reporters Without Borders hails the initiative and wishes the agency
good luck.
