Ghana signs agreement with Cuba for more doctors

Health - Ghana on Tuesday signed an agreement with Cuba to supply the
West African state with more doctors.

Some 250 Ghanaians will also train as doctors in Cuba, according to the
Medical and Academic Services agreement signed by Health Minister,
Sherry Ayitey and the Cuban ambassador in Ghana, Jorge F. Lefebre
Nicolas, to support a quality health delivery system.

There are scores of the members of Cuban Medical Brigade serving in
various parts of the country and the agreement will see more Cuban
doctors flown in.

The agreement comes as a stand-off between the government and doctors in
public hospitals over salary has led to a strike by the medical officers
for three weeks thus crippling health delivery.

The Cubans are expected to support doctors at the 37 and Police
Hospitals, who have been working overtime to take care of patients as a
result of the strike.

Ayittey noted that Cuban doctors had always supported the health
ministry since the size of the population outnumbers the number of
doctors the country produces.

She described the agreement as "a renewal of the government's commitment
to have the wide doctor patient ratio bridged".
