Russian and Cuban authorities are considering a new joint Cuba-based
airline, according to the Russian government daily newspaper,
Rossiyskaya Gazeta, which quoted deputy minister of transport Sergey
Aristov.

According to the report, the carrier will create additional connections
between Russia and Cuba and link Russia with other countries in Latin
America and Caribbean countries via a new established hub in Havana. The
head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Denis Manturov, said the
traffic from Russia to Cuba is growing every year. In 2011, 80,000
Russian citizens visited the island. Russia currently does not have
direct connections with most Latin American countries and passengers
need make two or three transfers to travel there.

Russia's hotel-booking service, Oktogo, has reported that Latin America
and the Caribbean are overcoming Southeast Asia as the most popular
exotic destinations for Russian travelers.
