Cuban dissidents and human rights activists lost fixed voice, internet
and mobile service during the papal visit of the last week of March,
reports US newspaper El Nuevo Herald. Some calls were interrupted
abruptly and incoming callers heard a message saying the number was
misdialled. Martha Beatriz Roque of the Cuban network of community
communicators (RCCC) said her service was cut early on Monday and
coincided with 24-hour police surveillance during the pope's visit to
Havana. In addition to leaving opponents without communications for up
to four days, the government also arrested 300 people ahead of the event.
