2 smugglers sentenced for deadly trip in November 2007
A boat captain and crew member convicted in a migrant-smuggling
conspiracy that led to the drowning death of a passenger near Palm Beach
were sentenced on Friday to federal prison.
U.S. District Judge Daniel Hurley sentenced Aurelio Sanchez-Ortega, 21,
to more than seven years in prison and Angel Julio Navarro-Lliteras, 36,
to 19 months.
The two Miami men were charged with four others for illegally
transporting 35 Cuban migrants on a 33-foot boat in November 2007 --
including one, Carlos Alberto Pons-Arias, who drowned as he tried to
swim to shore.
Three of the other four defendants have pleaded guilty and been
sentenced. But the fourth, Luis Arce Perez, is believed to have fled to
Cuba, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
ICE urges anyone with information to call 1-866-347-2423.
