Developed nations and aid donors are closely watching Cuba's reported
efforts to increase its influence in the Pacific region.
Radio Australia's Campbell Cooney reports that Fiji's interim government
has confirmed Cuba's offer to provide sporting assistance and doctors
for Fiji's health services.
Internationally it is estimated there are 20,000 Cuban doctors working
in around 60 developing countries, including Solomon Islands and Nauru.
Dr Richard Herr from the School of Government at the University of
Tasmania says medical expertise is all that Cuba can offer in terms of
assistance.
He says, however, the fact that Cuba has built close relationships with
China and Venuzuela will have the developed world worrying about its
intentions in the Pacific.
The Cuban Government has also offered to provide Fiji with training in
boxing and other sports.
