About 48 immigrants, mostly Haitians, held

HILLSBORO BEACH, Fla. -- Authorities detained 46 illegal immigrants
Friday after the group landed on the beaches of this upscale
neighborhood in a 45-foot cabin cruiser.
Most of the immigrants were Haitians, including 27 men, 15 women and a
boy and a girl. The group also had one man from Cuba and another from
Jamaica, said Border Patrol spokesman Steve McDonald.
"To me it looks like a human smuggling operation," Police Chief John
Ballard said.
Authorities tracked the group after an officer spotted two Haitians
walking along a Broward County road. They said they were illegal
immigrants and told him there were others.
Immigration officials were questioning the immigrants and all most
likely will be deported. Under federal law, the Cuban will be allowed to
stay.
