Not so fast, Raúl!

Not so fast, Raúl!

That interesting job title on the Cuban government web site that gave
Raúl Castro a big promotion to the first secretary of the Communist
Party appears to be a boo-boo. So says webmaster Omar Torres, at
"Información y Difusión de la Asamblea Nacional del Poder."Rc

Vanessa Lopez, a research assistant at the University of Miami Institute
of Cuban and Cuban American Studies, wrote to the web master and
inquired whether it was true that Raúl Castro had been bumped up. Torres
said "Our commander in chief Fidel Castro Ruz is the first secretary of
the central committee of the PCC. Comrade Raúl Castro Ruz, elected this
past Feb. 24 as president of the councils of state and ministers, is the
second secretary." He also clarified that Omar Cienfuegos is a vice
president.

"Thanks for your visit," he said.

Torres didn't explain why the web site listed Raúl as first secretary
when the party's own web page lists him as second secretary. And he
didn't say why he was still calling Fidel commander in chief. Maybe he
didn't get the memo?

By Thursday, the government site was "Under Construction."
