Cuba expects better citrus crop

Tholen - The Cuban citrus sector is preparing for a better harvest than
last year. The major plantation on the island is expected to collect
600K MT of oranges and grapefruits during the campaign of 2006-2007,
after a season hit by hurricanes and drought.

On the plantation of Jaguey Grande, which represents 60% of national
production and in between 70 and 80% of national exports, a productivity
of 25 MT per hectare is realised at present, which is the highest of the
entire country. With $ 100 mln. in exports, citrus is the second
agricultural export product of the country, after tobacco.

Europe is the biggest market. In 2004 Cuba was the third exporter of
grapefruit in the world, behind the US and Israel, According to the
Cuban government, Cuba disposes of an acreage of 30.711 hectare oranges
and 20.809 grapefruit crops.
