Students studying in Cuba lobbied the Board of Education this year for an increase in their allowance after the Castro government levied an 18 per cent tax on any US currency carried into the island. The Board of Education gives the students an annual allowance of US$1650 per year and the Cuban tax therefore effectively reduces the amount of that allowance by approximately US$300.
Monies were set aside to bring some temporary relief but the BOE has resolved to review the issue to come up with a more permanent solution in the new year
