Four people died and 11 were injured in a highway accident Monday in the
eastern Cuban province of Granma, state television reported.

The accident occurred when a small bus on the road from Bayamo, a city
in Granma, to Holguin clipped the rear wheel of a cart, went out of
control and hit a tree.

Ciro Estrada, director of Carlos Manuel de Cespedes Hospital where the
injured occupants of the bus were taken, said that 10 of them suffered
"head and thoracic injuries" and that one of the patients had to be
operated for a severe head injury.

In 2011 there were 11,604 recorded traffic accidents that left some
8,240 people injured, according to a report by the National Transit
Authority released last week.

Traffic accidents are in fifth place among the causes of death on the
island. EFE
