FIU couple accused of being Cuba agents

MIAMI (AP) - A Cuban-American couple accused of using their employment
at Florida International University as a cover-up to act as Fidel
Castro's agents are seeking to be released from jail.
Carlos and Elsa Alvarez will be in court Wednesday in Miami. Their
judges will ask the judge to release the pair on bail until their 2007
trial. But federal prosecutors said they're a risk to flee the United
States and should be kept in custody.
Defense attorneys are also challenging whether the FBI lawfully obtained
warrants under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act to eavesdrop on
the pair. Prosecutors said it will take months to produce the
information about thousands of intercepts.
The Alvarezes have pleaded not guilty to charges of failing to register
as required as agents of a foreign government. Prosecutors have said
they spied for Castro for years on Miami's Cuban-American exile community.
