Vegetables guaranteed in Cuba
Tholen – In the surroundings of La Espirituana, which lies south of
Havanna on the other side of the Island of Cuba, 36 greenhouses are
constructed which are intended to create diversity in the offer of
vegetables – all year round. According to the Cuban government,
vegetables are indispensable for any particular healthy diet. In the
project in the zone of La Quinta mostly tomatoes, cucumbers and
capsicums have been planted.
About half of this production is destined for exports, a quarter is
distributed to the people through regular rations and the remainder is
sold in the free trade to hospitality companies. Also a small acreage of
semi-protected cultivation is tilled for the production of lettuce, leaf
vegetables and cabbage, radish, etc.
