20 Cuban doctors to take up posts this week
Tuesday, March 21st 2006
Weeks after an agreement was signed between the governments of Guyana
and Cuba, 20 doctors have arrived here and will be assigned during this
week, according to a Government Information Agency (GINA) release.
The doctors will be dispatched to West Bank Demerara, East Coast
Demerara, and areas in Region Six, during this week. The other
placements to hinterland communities will follow soon after.
This initiative is in response to residents' calls for doctors during
outreach exercises by President Bharrat Jagdeo.
The Cuban medical team includes two anaesthesiologists and according to
Dr Bheri Ramsarran, Director of Regional Health Services Unit at the
Ministry of Health, the two specialists will initially be stationed at
the Georgetown Public Hospital before being transferred to the West
Demerara Regional Hospital (WDRH), the GINA release stated.
"These specialists will strengthen significantly the capacity of the
WDRH to perform surgical interventions," Dr Ramsarran said. Under this
agreement, Guyana stands the cost of accommodation and a stipend for the
medical personnel.
Among the communities to benefit are Black Bush Polder, Moruca, Port
Kaituma, Paramakatoi, Kamarang, Annai, Linden, Nabaclis and East and
West Bank Demerara. At least one doctor each will be dispatched to
hospitals in communities such as Matthew's Ridge, Charity, Leguan and
Wakenaam.
Two of the doctors, Dr Daniel Yanez and Dr Noel Daniel, are specialists
in general surgery and gynaecology respectively. They will be stationed
at the New Amsterdam Hospital. The others are general physicians.
Already 40 Cuban doctors are working in Guyana.
