Cuba will be allowed in World Baseball Classic

Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Cuba will be allowed to enter the upcoming World Baseball Classic.
US Treasury Department spokeswoman Molly Millerwise told The Sports Network a license was issued Friday allowing the Cubans to participate in the 16-team tournament.
"We were able to reach an agreement that upholds the legal scope and the spirit of the sanctions," Millerwise said.
Major League Baseball's first application to allow Cuba to play in the classic was denied by the Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control.
The commissioner's office and the players' association then reapplied after Cuba made it clear it would donate any profits it receives from the tournament to victims of Hurricane Katrina.
U.S. Federal law forbids most transactions with Cuba in order to deny money to the communist government.
The tournament, in which the world's best players will participate on national teams, takes place from March 3-20.
Cuba will be in Group B with Panama, Puerto Rico and the Netherlands and will play its first-round games in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
