Key West is renewing its historic roots with Cuba as passengers can now
board the first weekly commercial flight from Key West to Havana in more
than five decades.
Flights will take off on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from Key West
International Airport to José Martí International Airport. The new
flight service is from Air Marbrisa and Mambi International Group, which
collaborated for the project.
The first flight takes off on Friday.
The route is being billed as the first weekly commercial flight of its
kind since the 1960s. A lot of paperwork is involved with the flight as
laws make the flight only open to Americans with permission from the
U.S. government.
But travel restrictions are slowly easing.
"I made the application two years ago to be the port of entry for Cuba
and I thought that would take forever. It did not," said Key West
International Airport Director Peter Horton.
Key West's new flight service positions itself to be ready in case
travel to Cuba is allowed for all Americans.
