Nurses trained in Cuba cleared to practice
9:57 am, Sun November 3, 2013
Twenty-six Jamaican nurses have now been cleared to receive their
license to practice.
The nurses who were trained in Cuba had complained of difficulty in
obtaining the license.
"For persons studying in Cuba, in the present instance, they needed to
have produced a particular certificate that they would have received on
completion of their course. That certificate they did not have, so in
the interim period we were working out a formula for them …. I have been
told that the documentation finally came" said Dr. Fenton Ferguson,
Health Minister
The nurses have to first complete their mandatory internship before
receiving their certificates.
In an interview with RJR News last month the nurses who graduated with
their Bachelor of Science degrees in Nursing in August 2012, said they
were getting the runaround from the licensing authority, the Nursing
Council of Jamaica and as a result were unable to get the license needed
to practice.
