Havana, Apr 3 (Prensa Latina) Baracoa, at the easternmost part of the
island, increases coconut production to replace imports.
Digital newspaper Venceremos reports that territory of Guantanamo
province harvested 18,900 tons of the fruit of the so-called Tree of
Life or of the 100 uses.
In 2007, a total of 239 tons of coconut were exported, double the
planned amount, while delivery of inputs to the only factory of
activated carbon in the country was accomplished. The carbon is used in
water purification and unreeking of eau-de-vie.
Three-fourths of Cuban coconut plantations are located in Baracoa, over
700 miles east of Havana.
