A Pickering woman was attacked by a shark last week as she swam at a
Cuban beach with her husband.

Soile Hamalainen says she and her husband, Tarmo, were in neck-deep
water when she felt something bump into her. "I saw the head of the
shark beside my shoulder, its mouth open, and my whole arm in its
mouth." She says she saw her own blood in the water around her.

Her husband says he grabbed the shark's fin and tried to kick the shark
to scare it away.

Hamalainen's arm was ripped to the bone, and there were fears it might
have to be amputated. She was flown to Toronto on the weekend and is now
expected to recover fully.

Hamalainen says she'd love to return to Cuba, but doesn't plan to swim
in the sea any time soon.
