I support the American embargo on Cuba
Wednesday, January 3rd 2007
Dear Editor,
The United Nations voted overwhelmingly for America to lift the trade
embargo it had imposed on Cuba since the revolution brought Fidel Castro
to power. Over the years the United Nations resolutions always gain
majority support to remove the embargo which America has refused to do.
I am in total support of the American embargo, lifting it will be a
victory for Castro and legitimise Castro's illegal and undemocratic rule
which he has imposed for forty years.
Under Castro democracy is dead, those who oppose Castro's regime are
afraid, there is no opposition press, no political parties, no freedom
of speech and no free travel.
Castro in power has refused all calls for democratic reforms, no
persuasion can change Castro's tight control. Former American President
Carter failed to gain any concessions from Castro.
Castro offers many developing countries doctors to work in their
countries, scholarships to study in Cuba and trade so as to develop
relationships.
This does not mean they must support Castro's illegal regime, but they do.
Yours faithfully,
Baldeo Permaul
