A shipment of more than 4,000 tons of poultry will be loaded onto the
vessel Marianao Ice at the Port of Corpus Christi this week, bound for
Cuba. The shipment, from Arkansas-based Ozark Mountain Poultry, is the
first poultry shipment of the year for the port. Michael Perez, the
port's director of business development, expects 2007's tonnage to
increase over last year's total.
The port has strengthened ties with the communist island nation since
the signing of a memorandum of understanding in 2003. Since then, more
than 100,000 tons of rice, beans, wheat and poultry have been shipped to
Cuba. The five-decade U.S. trade embargo on Cuba does not allow the
import of Cuban products, but allows the export of agricultural and
medical products for humanitarian aid.
