Summit in Havana of 'The Mentally Ill Ones'

The Summit of the Non-Aligned Countries in Havana, Cuba is a gathering
of the most select countries in world politics. Strong defenders of
liberty and democracy from Iran to Syria, as well as North Korea,
Vietnam, and Mongolia, have been warmly received by Summit host,
Castro's Cuba, which also speaks volumes in terms of civil liberties,
for which Cuba is notorious. Groucho, the only dignified Marx in
history, once said he refused to join any club that would have him as a
member. On the other hand, the followers of the other Marx display few
such scruples after having so completely alienated itself.

Hugo Chavez, the star of the event with permission of the absentee host
[Fidel Castro], said that the event had been called so that the Movement
would become an instrument for restoring balance to the world. For
Chavez, this balance has not yet been achieved; one must only listen to
him accuse President Bush of organizing the September 11th attacks. But
let's not be pessimists, the Summit has just begun and it's time to
speak of results rather than psychotics.

The purpose of this summit is for it to transform itself into a "United
Nations of the South"- once again a Chavez dixit [an unproven
assertion]- for which he is counting on the spiritual assistance of
Father Annan, Secretary-General of the U.N., who is always on the side
of liberty and who congratulated Cuban authorities for hosting such a
happy event. He blessed the tyrannical conclave while claiming that,
"the world has changed tremendously since the foundation of the
Non-Aligned Movement various decades ago, but their essential objectives
continue to be as relevant as ever."

The truth is that some of these essential objectives have indeed being
accomplished. The inauguration of the Summit commemorated the fifth
anniversary of one such objective, and which continues to provide so
much satisfaction to the Movement's participants.

The strange part is that although the Movement is comprised of countries
that claim to be "non-aligned," all nations participating appear firmly
and commonly linked by a furious hatred of everything that United States
of America stands for, a country that was also invited to join the
Summit. What a peculiar way to vindicate their right to independent
criticism in international politics.

But don't fret, ZP [Spanish Prime Minister Zapatero] sent his official
representative to the Summit, the ineffable Bernadino Leon, so that he
could take in all the confusion. The only thing missing is for Spain to
appeal for renewed membership to this exclusive club, and to organize
the next such Summit in Madrid. In a forum with characteristics such as
these, only Foreign Minister] Miguel [Angel Moratinos RealVideo] would
be able to obtain unanimity in favor of the Alliance of Civilizations
RealVideo.

[Editor's Note: This author is likely referring to the fact that the
non-aligned movement contains an array of Muslim and non-Muslim nations
that have good relations, so that the Alliance of Civilizations, which
is a U.N. program proposed by Spanish Prime Minister Zapatero would
likely down well with the non-aligned movement. The statement of purpose
of the Alliance of Civilizations is to, "advance collective action
across diverse societies to combat extremism."]
