A Cuban doctor stationed at the Hlatikulu Government Hospital survived
death by the skin of her teeth after being stabbed several times all
over the body by unknown men.
After the stabbing, she was stuffed inside a wardrobe in her house,
together with a friend, and left for death. The men were reportedly
armed with knives and a pistol. It has been established that the doctor,
identified as Milagro Gonzalez, was attacked together with a visiting
friend from Cuba last Thursday just after 5pm.
One of the men is said to have emerged from a nearby bush before
entering the house. Efforts to rape her friend were futile as she
reportedly fought back like a tiger. The men are said to have eventually
given up and locked the women inside a wardrobe.
Milagro and two male doctors namely; Moriso Gonzalez and Rohero
Gonzalez, with whom she was sharing the house, are part of the team of
doctors recently sent from Cuba to assist in some of the Kingdom’s
hospitals and clinics.
On arrival, the doctors were deployed in almost all the country’s
hospitals. The doctors were living in a rented house situated at New
Town township, about two kilometres from the hospital. The male doctors
had gone to do shopping in town when the bandits struck.
On their return, they were shocked to find the house in shambles with
some of their belongings missing. As if that was not enough, they were
shocked to the wits after realising that their fellow citizens had been
locked inside the wardrobe.
Police Public Relations Officer Superintendent Vusie Masuku confirmed
the incident, adding that no arrests had so far been made. He assured
that police would leave no stone unturned to have the culprits brought
to book.
“We appeal to members of the public to assist us in order to have the
three men arrested. Anyone with information should contact the nearest
police station or dial 999,” he said.
Also confirming the attack was Shiselweni Regional Health Administrator
William Makinati Shongwe.
“I was not able to personally go and assess the injuries inflicted on
one of the doctors.
When I was called, the only thing I was told was that they were at the
hospital (Hlatikulu) receiving treatment after the attack. I,
thereafter, prepared a report which I submitted to the head office,”
said Shongwe.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the Hlatikulu Neighbourhood Scheme Charles Mkete,
who also confirmed the attack, condemned the act saying it had painted a
bad image of the country.
“I found the house in a terrible mess and was shocked to see the female
doctor soaked in blood with multiple stab wounds all over her body,”
said Mkete.
The valuables stolen from the doctors include a digital camera,
passports as well as clothes. A large amount of money was also stolen.
The doctors are said to have relocated to Mbabane after the incident,
hence efforts to talk to them were futile.
