Deep Sea's power play ensures £1m contract in Cuba

A YORKSHIRE manufacturing company is helping to solve electricity
problems in Cuba after winning a £1m contract to supply technology to
the Caribbean country.
Deep Sea Electronics, a North Yorkshire manufacturer of control systems
for the power generation industry, will distribute more than 4,000
generators for the project which is expected take 18 months to complete.
The systems will help alleviate Cuba's growing electricity problems,
caused by lack of investment which has resulted in frequent blackouts
and energy shortages – a situation made worse by Hurricane Ivan.
Latin American sales manager Miles Revell said: "We worked hard with a
number of different generator builders to bid for the contract and along
the way we fought off stiff competition from other control manufacturers
from France, China, and Eastern Europe."
The company has recently invested £750,000 to extend its production
facilities at Hunmanby, near Filey, to prepare for future expansion.
The development follows a period of sustained growth for the company
over the last 10 years. Declining to reveal exact figures, it said it
had increased turnover fourfold, and increased its workforce from 43
employees to 69. This year the company expects to exceed growth targets
by more than 21 per cent.
Main clients of the firm include power and water companies and Deep Sea
Electronics supplies its systems worldwide.
Managing director Eddie Sheader said "Most of our competitors now
manufacture in Eastern Europe or the Far East to cut overheads and staff
costs, but we believe in investing in technology and staff here in the
UK, where the processes are firmly under our own control.
"This enables us to maintain the high levels of quality our customers
have become accustomed to, whilst still being competitive in the market."
