Privately grown produce seized by police
HAVANA, October 12 (José Antonio Fornaris, Cuba Verdad / www.cubanet.org) – The National Revolutionary Police carried out early morning raids last week at the Egido market in Old Havana, seizing three truckloads of fruits and vegetables grown by private farmers.
The police ordered the drivers of the trucks to take the produce to various government warehouses in Havana.
The merchants at the market said the bananas, melons, yuccas and other fruits and vegetables had been grown on cooperative farms that had all of their documentation in order. They said they were fined 750 pesos each.
The police arrested several people buying the produce directly from the trucks for re-sale elsewhere.
Although the state owns 80 per cent of the island’s land, it has never been able to meet the demand for fruits and vegetables.
